ACRT Pacific is proud to recognize Vegetation Management Inspector (VMI) 1 Steven Owen of the North Valley South Chico team with the Safety Champion Coin for his quick thinking and commitment to protecting others during an incident near Lake Almanor, Calif.
On Aug. 11, 2026, Steven was traveling on Highway 32 when he noticed a smoking trailer along the side of the road. He stopped to check on the occupants and offer assistance and learned that the trailer was on fire.
Steven retrieved his water backpack and began helping to control the situation. During the response, a burning trailer tire exploded, scattering embers and igniting nearby vegetation. Steven quickly used his water backpack and shovel to extinguish the resulting spot fire before it could spread.
With limited cell service in the remote area, Steven continued traveling in search of a signal to contact emergency services. Along the way, he discovered a second spot fire and used his remaining water, shovel, and fire rake to extinguish it. He later coordinated with a utility employee responding to additional spot fires and confirmed that local fire departments had been notified.
Steven’s actions helped prevent multiple fires from spreading into surrounding vegetation in an area that has experienced significant wildfire activity. His situational awareness, initiative, and willingness to assist demonstrated a commitment to protecting the public, fellow workers, and the environment that extends beyond his day-to-day responsibilities.
In recognition of his response, Steven was presented with the ACRT Pacific Safety Champion Coin.
Congratulations to Steven for demonstrating what it means to put safety into action and for helping protect the communities and landscapes where we work.
